About Us

Three Castle Head Farm is a unique property located on the edge of the most South Westerly peninsula in Ireland. It commands stunning views of the rugged Irish coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. The farm includes 250 acres of land on which sits the 12 th Century Dunlough Castle, one of the earliest promontory forts in Ireland. The Castle itself is perched on the edge of awe-inspiring cliffs with a large freshwater lake to the one side.

Three Castle Head is a working sheep farm run by Lukas and Joanne Ungerer. It has been the Ungerer family’s home since the mid nineteen seventies when they moved to Ireland and more recently has been expanded to include a café/restaurant and holiday rental conversions

It now serves as a venue for elopement weddings and various private events and is also available as a unique location for photo shoots and filming.

Three Castles Head Farm is located just off the well-known Wild Atlantic Way and is a stones throw from the popular Mizen Vision Lighthouse, Barley Cove Beach and the charming fishing village of Crookhaven. There is plenty to occupy visitors of all ages here no matter what the weather.

A car park is open to visitors from the start of April through to the start of January. The walk is closed to the public for the months of January, February and March.

Accomodation at Three Castle Head Farm

Three Castle Head Farm was originally a cloghán – a small cluster of rural dwellings that was traditional to Ireland and Scotland. This tradition dates back to medieval times when clans, families or other groups of people would live together in order to farm communally and thus maximize the potential yields on poor farming land. These clogháns, unlike villages, did not have any formal buildings such as a church or school. In recent years, three of these buildings have been converted into rental properties.

The holiday houses are situated on a working farm overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Dunlough bay. This part of the country is often referred to as the ‘back of beyond’ and all of these properties, given their remote location, are perfect for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life and escape to the wide open spaces of the Irish countryside.

Accommodation at Three Castle Head Farm includes a large open plan loft conversion, The Loft, and Lukas and Joanne have converted the old Tack Room into a bijou courtyard cottage for one to two people. They recently built the unique cabin, The Hideaway.

Staying in this area is a nature lovers dream – some of the wildlife here includes wild birds, foxes, sheep, rabbits, seals, sharks, whales, dolphins and much more. It is very popular with Bird Watchers and many first sightings of new species to Ireland have taken place here. It is also a great spot for Whale Watching. Three Castle Head is also very popular with people that enjoy hiking, hill walking and photography as there is an abundance of spectacular mountain and coastal views here, not least Dunlough Castle itself.
